Anonymous said: "how offended would you be if a bunch of white people started speaking spanish" OMFG, who do you think invented the spanish language, oh gee a bunch of fucking white European people. That post screen cap you blogged gave me cancer.
I’m honestly really concerned that this is what you got out of my post because it’s very much irrelevant to the message I was trying to convey.
I can’t really imagine what the point is of saying that white Europeans invented the Spanish language, unless it’s “because white Europeans invented this, it’s not cultural appropriation.” Which is, again, not what I was trying to say; I was trying to highlight a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural exchange - two things which the original poster was claiming are one and the same.
Learning Spanish is not cultural appropriation because it reflects a desire to communicate effectively, rather than being an act which takes objects of cultural significance and strips them of their meaning/context. It has nothing to do with Spanish “being invented by white people,” and you’re kind of ignoring the whole “those white Europeans invaded Latin America, spread disease, tried to wipe out most of the native population, and forced the rest to assimilate” thing.
